Hello everyone. Just a little update to let you know how the racing season and awards are progressing
Sneaky Simon had a great ride in the ECCA National B festival race around the Matching Green circuit. With riders from UK pro teams such as Team Wiggins and Sigma Sport, the pace was very high and the bunch lined out for most of the race as the photo from our Marshal Martin shows. Simon finished in the bunch in 44th
James V2 Samuel finished 24th in the Colchester Abberton Reservoir Road race. Another fast race at 26mph average saw V2 hiding in the wheels before the final sprint. A little too far back saw him penned in but maybe that was for the best with the tailwind downhill recently re-gravelled sprint finish…
Adam Hardy has also had a dabble in a few circuit races at Hog Hill and Stratford, and is clearly now getting more used to riding with the local nutters and has got a few solid bunch finishes.
The North Weald TLI Series is in full swing, and the racing has been fast and furious this year with around 80 riders per race. So far we have had a great turn out from the Crest, with Simon K, V2, Rocket (Ian S), Paul Elliot and Matt Gallagher regular attendees. We have also had Evan C, Rob Babs Windsor, Giles, Farmer Dave, Pete Wragg and Jeannette getting stuck in! For a few this was their first experience of racing and they did really well and I’m sure over the season they’ll make great progress and hopefully before long will be able to lead me out at the finish 😉 Dawn has also been helping with finish judging which is very much appreciated by all the riders. So far we have had a few top 15 finishes from Simon K, Rob W, V2 and Rocket, with V2 currently 3rd in the TLI national “senior” age category and Jeannette joint 1st in the H category.
Believe it or not, we have a youth rider! Jacob Hardy is in the U12 category and last month competed in his first ever race over at Hog Hill as part of the ECCA Festival. A fantastic ride saw him not only finish the race, but he was 7th out of around 15 starters beating many boys who have a few years racing experience. Last weekend then saw Jacob race at Stratford Velopark and he went even better, finishing 3rd. So a huge congratulations to him on showing us senior riders how it’s done! I wonder how many years before he beats his Dad (Adam) at the club 10’s! 😝
Will Rogers 10 Trophy and other TTs
Adam Hardy has set 2 times so far of 24.09 and 24.04. 3 times are needed in total to be eligible, so anyone can still technically win! Remember you can now set your time at any TT run by a club on the Navestock Side course.
Jeanette has also been doing a few 50mile TTs in some very respectful times of around 2.5hours. Adam also represented us near Newmarket on a TT but unfortunately, he was clipped by a car wing mirror and had to DNF. Luckily both he and the bike were ok as he managed to stay upright.
The best result I know of for the year so far saw Sneaky Simon win the points race at the Welwyn Track League. We have a few guys going through the track accreditation at the moment so next year we should have a couple extra riders in the local track leagues.
Hill Climb Trophy
The executive committee has agreed that this trophy will be awarded for an exciting and innovative one-off event taking place at Hog Hill at some point in the autumn. It will be open for all members and be on Sunday morning before the club run. It will be a 1v1 sprint format with the winner progressing through to the next round. So sprinting, lightness and tactics will all be important and increases the possibilities of who can win. Those not participating can get a cake and coffee from the café and watch some live racing. Further details in due course.
As of 5th June, the current top 5 are as follows:
Pete Wragg 7930, Farmer Dave Giles 6984, Matt Berry 5968, Simon K 4283, Ian Samuel 4258km. With Famer down to do London-Edinbrough-London it could be a close-run contest. Deadline will be the Monday after the Tandem weekend.
Outstanding Achievement award
The executive committee have decided that to highlight and celebrate the past achievements of the Crest well into the future, this award will be retrospectively award back to the year 2000. These years and 2017 will be awarded by a public vote open to all current Crest members. Further details will follow, but please do start thinking about what you and others achieved since 2000. They do not have to be racing achievements, they could be for a large commitment to the club or a particularly epic ride. Joint winners will be allowed where appropriate.
No one ever really knows where this mysterious trophy will end up, but I would like to stake my claim on behalf on the British Airways IT system crash.
Congratulations on making it to the end of the email. As you can see there’s lots going on and lots of people racing in various activities which hopefully shows good signs for the club.
